Seek Him

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”.

Jeremiah 29:11-13

This may be a familiar passage to us… although it’s likely that we know verse 11 better than the following verses. We like to hear the part where God says he has good plans for us but we may overlook the second part about seeking him with all our hearts.

Jeremiah is writing to the exiles in Babylon reminding them of God’s promise to bring them back from exile after seventy years. The Lord allowed them to be banished because of their sin and rebellion but he always planned to bring them home and here is Jeremiah, prophesying a time when his people will call on God, pray and seek him with all their hearts.

We have a jealous God. He created us for intimacy with him and even when we sin and he turns his face away, he’s already planning a way for us to come home if we choose to. His plan, the best plan, is for a future that will cause us to prosper and flourish.

How much do we long to be part of his plan? Do we want to see his purposes worked out in our lives enough that we will seek him with all our hearts? Above all, he wants our hearts.

Father, thank you that your love never fails and that when I wander off and try to do things my way, you have a better plan for me…better than I can ask or imagine. Please show me what it means to seek you with all my heart.
Father, I pray for those who don’t yet know the reassurance of your promise for their futures. For those who are struggling to find hope. Please reveal yourself to them more and more in these times so that they will call on you and know your peace.
